1/24 and 5/8. Find your common denominator. Then go from there. Does that help?

I have no idea where the other person got their answer.
5/8 OF 24 miles. OF always means multiply.
5/8 x 24= how much they had ridden
BUT you want to know how much they have left to go. So
your total miles (24) minus how many they had ridden
24- (5/8x24)= your answer

The person above is absolutely correct. I used to struggle with fractions until I thought of them differently.
Picture it this way:
They're going to ride 24 miles. They've only done 5/8 of the trip.
Which means they've split the trip into 8 parts, and they've only completed 5 of them.
Therefore 24 miles divided into 8 parts means each part is 3 miles, and they've done 5 of those parts.
So if they've done 15 miles, and the trip is 24 miles, how much is left to go?
