Our hot water went out on wenesday. We changed out the heating element in the tank on Thursday. We have hot water again but have run into a new problem. Now when we just turn the cold water on, it comes out cold for a little bit but then, warms up and runs hot. It does this whether the hot tap is on or not. We first noticed it in our kitchen sink. In doing a little research ourselves, we read that it could be a sign that we need to replace the cartridge in our kitchen sink. We have a moean CA87315C single handle faucet. We bought a new cartridge but cannot figure out where it's supposed to go in our sink. Does anybody have knowledge on how to change cartridges or any other thoughts on what could be going on? Thank You for your help.

Not sure what this means, Tmaybz, "It does this whether the hot tap is on or not".. Please explain.

In terms of the faucet itself, your solution sounds reasonable. The cartridge itself is FREE from Moen if you call 1800BUYMOEN (shipping included), but you'll need to wait 7-10 days! If you can't wait the 7 days just remove the plug/cap that says Moen on it (use tip of knife) and then find the correct size allen wrench to remove the allen screw in the handle.

Once the screw is removed you can lift the handle off and expose the nut that allows you to get to the cartridge.

Shut off the water supply, loosen the nut and then remove the cartridge assembly.

While the cartridge is out, turn the water back on while covering the faucet with a towel to clear the faucet of sediment/debris and then install the new cartridge and reassemble all!

Should do it...

I just meant that the only tap on could be the cold water and it still comes out hot.

We have tried taking the handle off but there's no nut underneath it. I'm beginning to think our sink is not put together right. Is it possible that we can get the cartridge from the bottom of the spout? Thanks for your help so far.

Have you been able to get the handle off? If not, did you use an allen wrench to remove the allen screw under that moen cap? You can't access the nut to the cartridge until you remove the handle...

Yes, we got the handle off and next cap off but still didn't find a nut.

Here is an exploded view of your faucet:

I believe you need to remove the spout hose (and hose adapter) from the equation before you can access the nut to the cartridge. This means disconnecting the hose underneath and pulling it up and through the valve body. Then you can remove the valve body and access the nut, OK?

Ok, we will try that next. I was looking at the exploded view and wondered if we could get to it from the bottom. Thank you.

Yeah, no access from the bottom... must access from the top as suggested. I know it's a bit of work for sure! It should resolve the issue in the end! Good luck!
