The answer is simple if you remember the Orders of Operations.

I will tell you that the answer isn't 1.

6/2(3)=

Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction.

So what would you do first?

I first added the numbers inside the parenthesis which was 2+1=3

6/2(3)=

6/2=3

3(3)=9

Take it by steps as Alty suggested... first do Parenthesis, then Exponents, then Multiplication, then Division, then Addition, and finally Subtraction.

So, following the order of operations:

6 divide by 3 ( 2+1)

First parenthesis

6 divide by 3 (3)

Then next, in this case, Multiply the 3 (3) = 9

This means, 6 divide by 9

Now, divide, 6 divided by 9 equals?

This is a great question, and one guaranteed to cause disagreement. The issue is how to treat an expression of the form a/b x c. If you treat multiplacation and division as having equal precedence in order of operationsyou proceed left-to-right and get (a/b) x c, or in this case (6/3)x3 = 9. I think this is how most people would interpret this problem - and it's how I believe most modern texts would present it. But there is a school of thought that says that multiplication has precedence over division, and some prominent text books of the past have followed that convention, so that a/b x c is intended to be thought of as 6/(3 x 3) = 2/3. So which is right? Both are, and this shows why it's up to the person who writes the expression to be clear what he means - using parentheses is essential to avoiding confusion.

I was always taught to use BODMAS

Brackets
Of (including anything written)
Division
Multiplication (same "level" as Division)
Addition
Subtraction (same "level as Addition)

Therefore:

6 divide by 3 ( 2+1)

6 divide by 3*3

2*3

Answer is 6
