My name is Dalton and Saturday night my heater started making a loud humming noise and it is the loudest at the return air vent. The burner ignites and then when the fan is supposed to go on, it hums and after a minute or so, the burner shuts down.

Hi Dalton and welcome, sounds like your fan motor or the fan itself is locked up. (maybe bearing down). Can you turnoff the power to the heater and try and turn the fan manually.. More info will get a better answer, type and model of heater? How old is it? Good luck

Yes, Dalton, please do as parttime suggest. If the blower wheel spins freely, you may get lucky and merely have to replace the fan motor capacitor. Let us know what you find and we will do our best to help out.

Thanks Partime and mygirlsdad. The unit is a Rheem Criterion II. The house was built in 2004 so it is probably 8+ years old. When the power is off the fan turns freely. Sometimes it will work but most of the time is doesn't and just hums loudly. If it is the fan motor, is that something I can change myself? Where would I go to find one? Home Depot?

Hi again Dalton, as MGD said, it could be the motor capacitor. You can check the cap with a multimeter and a little experience. Should be able to locate one at local HAV dealer, or order online. The motor change out is pretty straight forward if your handy.
