I have a 1992 Toyota Carina. Some day it couldn't start. I removed the relays and put them back and voilą! It started.

A couple of months later, it started jerking. This would however not happen when I step on it a lot.

Six months later, the Engine just stopped while I was driving. I called in an auto electrician who fitted in a new ignition coil and condenser. But barely a week after, the car won't start again and I am being told to replace the condenser and coil again!

I am beginning not to believe these guys and desperately need hep!

I've never heard of a Toyota "Carina." Do you mean Corolla? What engine do you have? Do you have a conventional ignition system, with points and condenser? This is what it sounds like. If so, I would replace the points (which the mechanic should have done, when he replaced the condenser). If your car has an Ignition Control Module, I would replace it--this could easily cause the problems you are experiencing. After that, use a timing light to set the timing. I would also replace the spark plugs (with the exact ones that originally came in the car), rotor, distributor cap, and spark plug wires.

Yeah, the Carina was an early 70's import here. But long gone from the US Toyota market. They still make it for overseas. Get the engine info off the hood sicker and let us know what you have. (like 4AF-E, or 3E-E) I need to know your engine family.

The Engine is 4-AF-E.

Called in the auto electrician. Appears this time there was a problem with the fuel pump circuit. This was rectified and was able to drive around over the weekend.

Why do you ask about the engine type? Anything specific that I have to keep looking out for?

I just needed to know what they put in the Carina since we here in the states never see the car. Toyota did away with the 4AF-E in '97 as Toyota started joint venture with GM.
It powered the Corolla and the Celica along with the Geo Pizum by GM.
I still know the common faults now that I know what you have. Looks like you're on top of things, though.

Regards.

Thanks. If The 4AF-E have been done away with, then it might be time to secure a more modern machine!

If you have the time, please post the common problems.

I've got a toyota carina e aswee. I had the timing belt and spark plugs renewd about 4 months ago, its been driving great. Then one evening I put petrol in it, it had been a bit low. Drove back from the petrol station and parked up for the night. In the morning my car wouldn't start and hasn't started since. All the lights come on, its cranking but doesn't seem to catch. The aa man couldn't figure it out and niether can my mechanic. He thought it was a blocked "cat", but seems that's not the problem. I've no idea what to do and can't afford a new car. I'm a community nurse and really need it for work because I've been walking mikles to all my patients. Any ideas. many thaks. Yazz

Yazz,

. Remove and fully charge the battery. Many auto parts stores will do this for free.

. Perform the tests in the link below:

I would replace the ignition coil and condenser, if the problem persists. Go with OEM parts.

Sounds like bad gas to me.
