Hi, We would like to put a toilet a sink and a one piece shower in our basement. We have a 4 inch pipe with a cap on it that comes through the concrete. What do we have to do

Hi Jamps...

If you want to install the bathroom so that the fixtures sit on the existing floor then you have two options:

1) chip up some of the concrete floor and cut into the drain pipes underground.. run drains/vents and then close up the floor and proceed.

2) install a pump system such as the saniflo macerator pump system. This option doesn't require you to break into the concrete floor but it does require you to rely on electricity and a pump to have the bathroom working!

Personally, I'd open up the concrete floor and do it right!

Another option would be to build the floor up about 6" or so and run the pipes above ground. You may or may not be able to connect into that 4" cap... depends on your local plumbing inspector as most codes won't allow a direct connection into the cleanout so you may have to open the floor up some no matter what you do (hence my recommendation to just do this right, open the floor and pipe as needed).

Back to you...
