I have an MTD snow blower. The gear shifter moves up and down but the wheel do not engage. What do I do to repair this?

Two person job here, engage the drive and have someone else closely inspect the end of the axle showing through the wheel. Does the axle turn when drive is engaged? Most blowers have a pin which can be pulled to allow free wheeling

The snow blower does free wheel. When I pull the handle to make it go nothing happens.

Thanks but that doesn't exactly answer my question. When the pin is pulled they all free wheel. When the drive is engaged do you see the axle turning inside the wheel?

If the MTD is like mine, then there is a belt that drives it. If the axle is not freewheeling, the belt could have broke or may need to be adjusted.

Not knowing the year or model of your machine, I can't really narrow it down but here are a fews things you can check. First disconnect the wire from the spark plug. Remove the belt cover on the top of the machine to see if the belt is in tact and engaging tightly. No problem there then proceed to the lower part of the machine. You may need to tip the machine up, I would recommend a 2nd person to help stablize the machine in the upright position. Remove the lower inspection cover, if your machine has a rubber drive disc, check the condition of the rubber. If it is flaking or worn down, it may need to be replaced. Also if your machine has any chains on the underside, one may be broken. Or if your machine is driven with clutches it may have a sheered pin. Some machines have gears instead of chains, the plastic gears can break. The pully which connects to the drive system on your machine may also have a broken key.
