I have a Coleman Powermate 2.2 kW 110 volt electric generator which uses a 5 HP Briggs and Stratton engine. I could start it without problems in December when we had a 4 day power outage near Seattle. It helped me out. Now I cannot start it.

I tried new gasoline. By using ether (Faststart?) I could get it going, but then had to keep the choke closed almost all the way. Now I cannot start at all, though the engine fires when I use ether. It won't stay going.

Where can I get a manual for this Briggs & Stratton 5 HP engine?

Taking the carb off seems a major task. Should I go to a Briggs & Stratton dealership?

How much might they charge?

Is the problem gum in the carburetor?

Helpful suggestions appreciated.

Some small motors have an auto cut off (& can't start) when the oil level is low. Might pay to check the oil level. TRWE

Because recently it ran good and when you spray ether in the carb it starts I would look to either contaminated fuel or none at all. The odds of a carb blockage are low.. . Usually the small engine with a carburetor problem is one that has sat for a season or two. Yours having just ran good says that it probably has not had time to gum up.

Being a generator it may have a long run fuel tank with a shutt off valve, double check that.
