I'm trying to find out the title of an old 80's or early 90's animated film that I remember scenes from as a kid. I probably watched it on Nickelodeon or HBO. There is a space colony where one of the scientists creates machines to help the colonists teraform the world. Some conflict ensues between the colonists and the machines (I can't remember what), and the colonists destroy most of the machines. The scientist then flees with his inventions to a remote area to work on them further in peace. At some point he grows old, eventually sporting a white beard, dies, and then his machines begin to chart their own evolution.

The movie may be in two parts or perhaps part of some anime series, as remember we move into the present day where the colony has become technologically advanced with a ruling overlord government. All of the officers wear a distinct red symbol on their uniforms. The scene from this time that sticks in my head is the fight scene between the main protagonist who I can't remember what he looks like and the antagonist. The antagonist has grey ashen skin and black hair that is in a pony tail. He wears a cape and the red symbol is blazoned across the front of his uniform. They get into a fight on a ledge, cat walk, or something with rails to it, and the bad guy is split open to revel that he is really an Android. Before this no one suspected that the ruling class (or the higher ups) were really machines.

That's about all I can remember from the show, and I would be eternally grateful to anyone who can help in revealing the source of these haunting images from the past.
