I am planning to remove a structural wall (currently 2 x 4 construction 16 in spacing) and have an opening of 12 feet. This is the first floor of a 2 story home and will be to open the kitchen and den to make a great room. Chesapeake Virginia

This is a question that will have to be answered by a certified architect or structural engineer. You will have to have drawings for made for the building dept.
