I just replaced a kitchen sink and the replacement drain configuration has a dome shaped covering over the end of the pipe.
Searched for an explanation of it function, but most explanations seem to just focus on the slip joints and elbow connection to the sink bowls.
Since there is no threaded flange, does the end just push into the open sewer pipe that is in the bottom of the kitchen cabinet?
It would be great is someone could explain how the overlapping pipes are supposed to work.

Exactly what part are you speaking of?

Does the dome look like one of the "domes" in the pictures below?

If so, the dome in the left picture is a flange... just slides over the pipe end and then slides back to cover a hole if needed. If you don't need it just discard it... not needed.

If the dome looks like the other picture then that is a mechanical vent... it does serve an important purpose and should just be left in place.

Yup, slides over the tube of the ptrap and then slides back down to cover the hole in the cabinet. If the pipe stops above the cabinet and the flange won't cover the hole then you can purchase a larger flange to cover the larger pipe/hole if needed.

Thanks for the replies. Strange that with so many Youtube video about kitchen sinks, was hard to find one that explained the flange.
I'm still curious about its function and working. Will try to get a photo, but not sure how to post it.

Click the link to close the dialog window OR repeat numbers 5 & 6 to attach another image.

Second method:

"Embed" image(s) from the internet. This method inserts an image wherever you wish within the text of your post.

Click the Insert Image icon above the posting window: A pop-up asking for the URL will open.

Enter the URL of the image in the field then click the OK button.

Here are the pictures, including view of underside of the fitting and the piece of white piping that was needed to make the connection by sliding into the open waste line termination.

Is there a spring mechanism attached to this fitting? In other words, if you push your finger up inside the unit can you move any parts around? Let us know, OK?

Hi Mark,
No moving parts or spring. It came with a Kitchen package that included Sink and drain configuration. There is an assembly drawing but its all in Chinese!
Its all hooked up now and working fine.
