Hello. This morning, I was woken up by severe pain in my left outer ankle, accompanied by moderate localized swelling, roughly the size of a golf ball. Pain shot like lightning down the top of my foot for about 30 minutes, the ached for an hour or so. 8 hrs later, still slightly swollen, almost no pain. But I've noticed veins on foot I've never seen before, and they seem pretty full. A nurse friend told me it may be a clot, being as I didn't injure it at any time. Should I worry? (Also: I have a history of high blood pressure, extremely high triglycerides, and elevated liver enzymes)

Did your nurse friend tell you that if you have a history of high blood pressure, elevated liver enzymes and you have a blood clot in your ankle, you should be worried. I would be very worried so, go to the ER, your doctor, walking clinic, wherever you can go to be treated.

And seeing as this is an international site and you don't say where you are, or time zone, whatever, then you should like DO IT NOW !

Well she didn't say for sure it WAS a clot, she didn't even see it. I just explained to her my symptoms, and my opinion that it would be very odd for me to have sprained it in my sleep.. but now that pain is gone, and swelling decreased, I can't really call an ambulance, and I don't have another ride to ER. Best I can do is call my Dr. First thing in the AM. Was just trying to find some answers until then.

You got an answer. See your doctor. That is unusual.

Unless it is an expert in the medical field, than I doubt it.

If there's any possibility that you have a blood clot it is an emergency. Pieces of blood clots can break off and cause strokes or cardiac arrest. There are procedures and medications to manage the problem but it's imperative to get help right away.

It might not be a blood clot. Given your liver issues, gout may be a possibility as well and can become very painful. Early treatment can spare you some of the discomfort.

I agree with the poster who recommends an immediate trip to the ER
