I live with two roommates in Guelph, ON and I'm not certain of the internet package I have (other than that I've been assured it's higher quality than a basic package), but I have horrible problems with slow service, especially it seems, connection resets. Most general browsing I do and small (under 50MB) downloads is not an issue. The specific problems I have are as follows:
- My Facebook chat disconnects randomly doing so every couple minutes, occasionally coming back on it's own but mostly only connecting again after a page refresh. It may run normally for a period of two hours or so, especially after I have just disconnected and reconnected to the service.
- Occasionally I have issues accessing my Hotmail inbox.
- Sometimes I have to retry sending email/chat messages
- I cannot download files larger that 50MB, often a larger download will not even start, or it will stop partway and notify me there has been an error.
- Youtube videos and simple online games like on Armor Games or Facebook will, after moments of play, notify me with an error to do with not being able to save because of a connection reset or connection time out.
- Sometimes I have to disconnect and reconnect to use ANY internet function. For example, I copy and pasted this question so that I could reconnect and refresh this page.
It worthwhile also to note, that I have these problems with no regard to peak use times or other people in the household sharing the internet. This is also the only place I have this issue with my laptop, being able to do any of the above things without difficulty at my parent's and friends' houses. My computer also indicates that I am still connected to the internet all the while that I'm not able to access it at all. Other people in the house seem to have small problems with connection as well but seemingly not to the extent I do.
Is this a just a problem of a bad service provider? Bad service to this area? Overtaxed lines? What is the problem here? But more importantly, is there anything I can do to fix it?
