Hi,
I am a graduate nurse from india.
I am presently staying in ILLINOIS state on dependent H4 visa.
To clear my nurse registration exams, I need a SSN ,which I don't have..
After some research, I found out that Maryland state is asking either for a SSN or a federal tax id.
My query is if my husband applies for a tax id for me here in Illinois,, can I use it for Maryland state...
Or please let me know if I have any other options
Thanks in advance...
Have you tried contacting your State Board of Nursing with your dilemma?

Yes, and SSN is mandatory...
Then in Illinois it is mandatory. I don't see any other way around it if that's the answer they gave you. They ARE the authority on this.

Yes, you WILL be able to use the ITIN for this purpose.
Your case SHOULD allow you to apply for the ITIN immediately, rather than wait until January to submit it with the tax return. You will need a SIGNED letter from the state of Maryland stating the need for the ITIN. You can submit that letter with the Form W-7.
Also, you will need to get a clear, color photocopy of your passport certified as a true copy by the Indian consulate in Chicago. This is a NEW requirement by the IRS. The old notarized passport photocopy will NO LONGER be accepted.
If you are relatively close to Chicago, you can drive to the consulate and have this done in one day. The process using the mail can take weeks, if not months. Recommend you call first, explain the situation and make an appointment.
