I would like to know if when I turn on my heat in the house the unit outside turns on . Is it suppose to do that? It seems like the Air is also on .My husband say's that it's not suppose to do that & someone told him that it was the thermostat not working correctly. Can you please give your oppion about this?
Thanks Debbie Moreno

The answer is: it depends on the type of system you have. If you have a gas or oil-fired furnace and the outside uinit is a compressor for air conditioning then the outside unt should not turn on when the thermostat calls for heat. But if you have a heat pump system then indeed the outside unit does turn on as it effectively pumps heat into the house from the outside. Heat pump systems are fairly popular in the south where outdoor temps only rarely get to freezing or below, but pretty rare in the north (although we just recently installed a small unit for heating and cooling our basement).
