I have a GE side by side refrigerator and it is not cooling properly. The fridge side is barely cool and the freezer side is freezing at the bottom (it seems) but not at the top. The ice has melted and ran down the freezer and when it got to the last rack it froze like a very large icicle hanging down. Both controls are turned as cold as they will go. Both doors shut properly. Please help... Thank You!

The cooling coil (evaporator) is in the freezer section. The thermostat actually controls the freezer temperature and the dial for the fridge side controls airflow from the freezer to the fridge section.

If unit runs continuously and doesn't get cold I would say it was time for a good vacuuming of the condenser coils under the fridge where the fan blows air through.

But you mentioned ice forming which means there might also be a defrost issue or plugged defrost drain line.

I would unplug unit for several hours to unthaw it. Pull unit away from wall, carefully remove cardboard cover from bottom rear of unit. You'll probably see a lot of dust built up. That needs to be cleaned with a vacuum carefully. Also vacuum the fan blades. Plug unit back in and see what happens.

It is better to wash out the coils to get off all traces of dirt and grease that attracts more dirt. Always make sure to seal up the rear before plugging unit back in and running. If you remove the cover to the freezer coils you can see the defrost heater and whether it is burned in two much of the time. The defrost t-stat is wired in series to the defrost heater and is found clipped on the defrost coils.
