I have a Sony 19" CRT from 2001. There is a cable box connected to it. No other inputs. Two nights ago when I was about to turn the TV off, the sound went away; I thought maybe I hit the mute or there was a cable glitch, so I just turned the TV off. The next morning, there was still no sound from the TV. I confirmed it wasn't on mute. I turned the cable box on and off. I wiggled each cable to make sure the connection was tight. Still no sound. When I turn up the volume, there is a very low white noise.

So with no changes or moving to the TV, I can't figure out what could've happened to the sound!

My TV in another room works fine - so it seems that the cable is working.

I'd appreciate all help on troubleshooting before I cave in and buy a new TV.

Thanks!

If there are other connections on the TV, for example, AV1 in or Aux.In, connect a dvd player or a vcr or a game console, and see if you have sound.

Another check is to plug the TV cable directly to the TV and use the internal TV tuner instead of the cable box.

If you have sound, then it could be a problem with the cable box.

If you have no sound, then its probably an issue with the TV.
