I have heard of this rumour sometime in 2010 about this December and Im trying to convince myself that it's fake and it's a big hoax. It can be difficult because of stuff coming on the internet and TV talking about Space or the theories. It can be hard looking at a interesting story on a news site because of the odds that it will talk about 2012 or anything about the Mayans. Is there some way to stop my mind thinking about this and telling it once and for all it is a big hoax?

It was 2000, then it was 2008, then it was 2010, now it is 2012 ( and where are you hearing it, that was old talk last year, sort of died away)

Before that, it was social security numbers that were the signs of satan and the world was ending. Then it was other things.

If you have to get a fear, make it one more realistic than this silly 2012 things

Its not a hoax what you hear about the Myan calendar. Its is very real that they had developed a calendar. But what the truth is about it is that it is the same as any other calendar. There is an end date. Then it all starts over. Really that is all there is to it. Just like flipping the Gregorian calendar from December to January to mark the new year the same applies to the myan calendar. The difference being they had a much more complicated calendar and it has cycles within cycles. Dec 21st is the ending of the largest of the cycles. Just relax. There is no real or logical reason to fret over it.

This is simply not true. No where does it say in Myan culture that the world ends with the passing of the long cycle.

The calendar does indeed finish at that time, but the meaning is open to debate and misinterpretation.
The End of The World can also mean the end of an AGE.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see..

Califdad is right. The Mayan calendar is cyclical, and on that December date, a new cycle starts. According to a Wikipedia article about this, "Two items in the Mayan classical corpus, however, do mention the end of the 13th b'ak'tun: Tortuguero Monument 6 and La Corona Hieroglyphic Stairway 12."

Apparently present day mayans are not worried about 2012; to them it was just a planting calendar. Mayans and fhe Aztecs had a lot of mouths to feed so the seasons had to be tracked down to the exact day in order to have good harvests.
