At 3 mph, 20 minutes.

I especially like this response:

"... you shouldn't worry too much about how long it'll take you to walk a mile. You should be more focused on finishing a mile. A mile on a typical high school track is 4 laps.

Find a local high school/college campus and walk on the tracks (they are usually open after school hours and during the weekends) and focus on finishing a mile (4 laps) and increase your laps by one each day if 4 laps become too easy.

It ISN'T always about time. Sometimes it's simply about JUST FINISHING."

And start walking a shorter length to let your body and legs get used to walking. Walk a block the first day or so, then two, then three, and so on.

20 minutes is a well paced time for fat loss ,but like wondergirl said don't even worry about time at first just focus on finishing and getting used to walking the first say week.

But stop thinking distance, walk with the time you have, if you don't walk because you can't do 1/2 a mile, you don't ever start. If all you have time for, is to the end of the block and back, it is better than no walk at all.

Also how long, in the city, waiting on traffic lights, or in the woods over limbs and hills. Time varies
