I work in NYC and I live in Philadelphia, PA. My employer does not take out taxes for my Phila. Local income tax. I have to file and pay this on my own. Is there a local tax in NYC? Since I currently have to pay this local tax, would it more beneficial if I move to NYC (strictly tax purposes - cost of living not a factor)?

From what I know doing payroll for our old Philadelphia office that state taxes would be the applicable state. PA has a work in, live out, and live in, work out. So if you live in Pa but work outside then you pay that tax. If you work in PA but live outside then a diff tax applies. I would just call H&R block. But I'm pretty sure you would pay the live in work out of tax for Pa. And if New York has that same tax situation then you would pay the work in live out tax, but I don't think that NY does. I know for sure it is always the applicable, or the state that applies. You employer should know this.
