Our beloved little high mpg car is not high mpg right now. It has been running rough for a few months and just has started idling so rough that it shakes and dies occasionally (2x yesterday)

I started to adjust the cable coming from the gas pedal to raise the idle, but this seems like a band aid fix. The root cause is... I appreciate any and all input. I am aware there can be many causes to this sort of thing.

Again, thanks in advance!

by the way this looks like a cool site! I just joined before typing this.

When was the last time you had it tuned? Air filter clean? Mass air sensors checked?

. Check for any codes or pending codes, using a scan tool. The thought, here, is to see if there is a problem with the MAF Sensor.

. Replace the platinum spark plugs (NGK only), if they have not been changed in 50,000 miles or 3 years, whichever comes first.

. Replace the spark plug wires, if they have not been changed in 80,000 miles.

. Clean the throttle plate, throttle body, and Idle Air Control Valve. Afterwards, clean the air box with a damp cloth and install a new air filter.

. Adjust idle rpm to spec, after the engine is at normal operating temperature.
