Will you mind telling us what culture/country of origin he is from, if it has a bearing on why he is so protective? Did anything go wrong when she turned 12? Is he afraid that you are too permissive about boys and going out, and so on? Is her mother there?

He was originally born in tanzania, I am a tanzanian too but my niece miggrated to canada along with him last year .
He was married to my sister years back will left her behind with me when she was preganant.. For a couple of years he never sent any expense till my niece turned 6.. I was like a father and mother to both my niece and her mum..
Few year later my sister fell sick with brain tumor..
He paid a vist to her here in tanzania after her opparation.. But never told her that he re married in canada to an indian woman . V ol indians..
After he left he never mention his intentions.. Few days later when my sister his wife called him he told her not to call again as he don't want any relation with her.. V struggled a few money and manage to get her a divorce and sole custody.. Its was very hard to maintain the expenses for few year without his help .
My sister decieded to hand him over the custody..
He came down

Is your sister alive? She has rights to see her daughter, even if she gave him custody, and if she is better now, she can go back to court and ask to have joint custody. Can she travel to Canada with you? How long can you stay there?
It's going to be a very difficult battle, but it should be done. It would be best done by hiring a lawyer, after shopping around for one in Canada with a good reputation.
Fortunately your niece was old enough to remember you and will want to see you someday, even if her father fills her head with lies. Try Facebook and other relatives and her school and anything you can think of for contact, and keep trying.
And if he remarried before he was divorced, the lawyer can use that against him.

Who is "v"? Your sister has to file for any custody or visitation. You can help, but she has to sign and appear.

Was there at anytime a formal court agreement on custody of the child?
