I have my A/C set on 70 but my thermometer reads 86. I had a technician to come out yesterday and he said I had a leak because the unit in the attic was frozen and the unit outside had ice on the cord. He thawed the both units and said that he put 2.2 units of freon in. Needless to say, he charged $55 for the freon and $138 dollars for a leak search. Then he says that he needed to replace the evap coil for $885 and the king valve for $200. What should I do? I feel like I've been taken...
Unit Make: Goodman
Unit Model: AM48W2H

Why have you been "taken"? What was done seems appropriately priced. Did they fix the leak? Does the unit run now? Conditions you explained are typical of low Freon.

Price for work done seems very reasonable. If you question the tech's opinion, get a second.

I don't know why a King valve would need to be replaced unless it were damaged during installation & won't shut off.

I have to agree, all seems within range. I know it hurts to get bills like this, but nothing is cheap and easy these days. Also, I completely agree with Grady. If you feel at all uncomfortable with the prices and quote, get one if not two or three different quotes from other companys.
