Hi,

I filed my taxes in late January after I thought I had received all my forms. After filing I received a 1099 form from a $50 bonus for opening a checking account. This raised my taxes to be paid by $8.00. I had originally received a refund so I would have to return the $8.00. So I filed an amended return to include the 1099 and since I had originally forgot to claim the federal excise tax I included it in my amended return. This finally resulted in a refund of $32 ($40 federal excise tax with one dependent). I got a letter from the IRS saying they had changed my return and saying the I owed 8.00. They do not mention the federal excise tax refund. Now it does not really matter to me about the refund, I can just send the 8.00 but I do not know if there was something wrong with my original return or the amended return and they will be contacting me later? Or would they have included any discrepancies in the letter I received? Should I try contacting the IRS about the discrepancy or just pay the 8.00?

Thanks for your help.

If you have already file the amendment, give it time to work through the system. Call the IRS using the number on the notice and tell them about the amendment. They will then hold off on any action to allow the amendment to be processed.

BOTTOM LINE: No one is going to jail or getting fined over $8, so just chill and let things resolve themselves.

I forgot a w2 on my taxes. I have a 1040x file and don't know how to fill it out
How do you fill out the 1040x form?

It HAS been long enough for the amendment to be posted to your account.

You can call 1-800-829-1040 and ask about the status of your refund.
