Hello, I have been on nine different birth controls over the past seven years or so. Roughly three years ago I started to develop a pain in my left abdomen. Sex started to become very painful as well. I decided to go to the doctor when my period stopped for three months and the pain increased. They put me on Medroxyprogestrin for seven days so I would start my period. I was then instructed to start taking a brand. During the time I was on the Medroxy, the pain increased and started going down my leg and into my foot. The doctor told me to keep taking the medication. So I continued and it got to the point where I could hardly lift anything at work or walk. Once I started the new pills, the pain decreased but was still heavily noticed. I was then on my period for a total of ten months. They did switch my pills one during this time. The blood was extremely clotted, black, smelled terrible, and was painful. I felt like I was dying inside.

After going to a new doctor and switching my pills again, the bleeding was still there but there was not as much. I had a ultra sound and nothing showed up and the next step would have been an laparoscopy but I ended up moving. Once I got insurance again I sought out a doctor in the area for the bleeding that started and the pain that started to increase. I don’t think this doctor is very knowledgeable because he put me on Lysteda and said it was like taking a painkiller without feeling drowsy. This pill was also supposed to stop my bleeding before he put me on the new pill. This was not the case. My cramps increased, the clots increased, people told me my eyes were glossy, I was having bad headaches, and trouble seeing. After taking three pills a day for two days I was done with those pills. A few days later I started my new pills, Natazia. These pills have completely taken away my sex drive, I have lost sensation throughout by body, I have bad hot flashes, and I am now breaking out with pimples that are deep beneath the layers of my skin. He has also given me an ultrasound that does not show any issues going on. I think the ultrasound should have been taken during the middle of the month or closer to my period because I am not experience the pain during that time. He said to try the this pill for one more month and then I can stop taking pills if I don’t like this pill. Why wouldn’t he prescribe me a different pill instead of giving me samples of Natazia to keep taking when they are not agreeing with my body? When I told him I have no sex drive now and spoke to him about the pain I had been feeling when I did have intercourse before I started these new pills he gave me a pamphlet about how to address these issues. I told him I had taken black cohosh before to bring my sex drive back, but then I started bleeding. He asked me where the pills were made because they mix antidepressants with black cohosh if they were made in China. He then said that he would prescribe me something to calm me down. He prescribed me antidepressants. I took those pills for two days and stopped. I did not sleep one wink in those two days, my jaws were so sore that I could hardly open my mouth, and my head was pounding. Taking antidepressants is not the problem. These pills are. Yesterday I gathered the names of all of the pills I have been on and their effects. I have their dosage for the progestin and estrogen also. I need to find a birth control that will work for me. Please help.

First, talk to your doctor. If you're not comfortable with what he's been prescribing or how he's been handling your situation, find someone else.

A few suggestions, just coming from years of fumbling for the right birth control method myself:

Try looking into a non-hormonal method of birth control, such as an IUD (Paraguard), diaphragm, or condoms.

Looking up Ocella, it looks like generic Yasmin, so I'm not sure why they prescribed that to you after you had difficulties with Yasmin, but pill-wise, it looks like all of your pills had a synthetic estrogen in them, so maybe a mini-pill (progestin only) might also be an option for you. If you do well on that, you might also want to consider depo-provera.

Best of luck, and again, your doctor needs to be your first and best resource!

I have spoken to my previous doctor and my current doctor about the IUD and they have both advised against it because I have not had a child. I have heard that people who have not bared a child have had the procedure done but it is very painful. I am also not sure which IUD would be best for me. I know the Mirena has hormones. I had a terrible experience with the Nuva Ring so I'm not sure if I want to go through a large amount of pain just to have the IUD taken out. I am also not sure if the Copper IUD would suit me. I may be allergic to copper. There are a lot of earrings that I cannot wear and I am not sure if they are copper or nickel.

I would love to stray away from hormones but my husband will not accept any method with a higher risk of pregnancy than the birth control pills. These bills have ruined my life and neither one of us wants to have kids. So I am stuck taking a medication that is preventing me from having children, sex, and happiness.

I am a little leery about taking a progesterone only pill because I believe the Medroxyprogesterone was a progesterone only pill. I was only on that pill for seven days, but those seven days were a nightmare. I had heavy bleeding, I cried for the most absurd reasons, and it was like my personality had completely changed.

I have had my mirena IUD in for the last 5 years. I got it put in when I was 20. The only problem I have ever had since I have had it was the first year my period was way off, and I would get cramping a lot. So I went back to the doctor and all that the cramping was, was I had cysts on my overies. Which the doctor said that every woman has them and sometimes they inflame (or something) she said they will go away by themselves, and they did.
I have tried just about every birth control before I got mirena and none of them were for me. I couldn't remember to take the pill every day, and I definitely did not like the nuva ring. I have not experienced any emotional unstability with mirena. I would sugest getting it, or I have herd good things about the thing that they put in your arm. Ask your obgyn about it. Good luck.

I am not a doctor, nurse, nor do I work in the medical field at all. What I posted was just my experience and my opinion. My post was not any kind of diagnosis. Please do not reply to my post as well.
