Hi, I am really confused about how to handle my current situation. I have been dating my boyfriend for 6 months. After 2 months he was diagnosed with HPV (warts) and had them burned off. He still has some fading scars but his doctor said that there have not been any new warts. I have stopped giving him oral but we do continue to have sex with condoms. We have not used condoms twice in 6 months, once early on and once recently. I have not had any warts and I have regular paps which are all fine. I have also been tested for STDs and I don't have any. I have taken two doses of Gardasil and the third will be in December. My question is, can I stop using condoms with my boyfriend? I love him and trust him. I just can't get over the psychological issues that go along with it and I need advice. I assume I already have what he has but am asymptomatic and I'm hoping that my immune system will just contain it. Can I decrease my chances of this by not using condoms? Can I aggravate the virus if I have unprotected sex with him from now on? Help!

If you have unprotected sex with him YOU can contract it and possibly in the future get cervical cancer as a result... even if you avoid visible genital warts... because the virus is in his system... not just where the warts appear.

Why would you take the chance? Twice, you had unprotected sex with him. When you come down with cancer, will it all be worth it?

Shouldn't be noted that, while certain HPV strains do cause cancer, the probability of developing cancer because of HPV is REALLY low.

That being said, continue to use condoms with your BF. If the strain he has has warts as an expression, you don't want to catch that. Besides that it is just good practice. Two forms of birth control is better than one, and one is better than none.

Gardisil injections are taken to prevent certain cancers and genital warts. It doesn't prevent all cases of cancer or genital warts. Just wanted to clarify this because some people believe that once three doses are received, then they are protected against both.

Good info I really agree with your advice.
