In the decade beginning with 1901,about 8.8 million immigrants entered the US. In the following decade, this number dropped to approximately 5.7 million people. Find the percent decrease, to the nearest whole percent.

OK I get it now. Yeah we haven't learned that, that would be why I wouldn't know thanks a bunch.

Sorry: try this
Original amount- new amount/divided by original amount
Then multiply x100
I typed it backwards before sorry!

My teacher gives us the answer since it is a review and I knew the answer would be 35% but didn't know how to get it so when you gave me that I did 5.7-8.8 and got -3.1 then divided that by 8.8 and got -.35 then mulitplied by 100 and got -35.23

8.8-5.7=3.1. 3.1 /8.8=35.227 which rounds to a decrease of 35%

So if it were increase would I just add then divide by the original amount?

5.7 / 8.8 = 65%

35% + 65% = 100%

New amount-original amount/ original amount, then multiply answer times 100%.

OK I understand that but there is another problem that says the number increases in 10 years so I added 252+398=650 and took 650/252=2.5793 I didn't think to multiply by 10 because the answer my teacher gave us is 57.9% but I kept getting the 2 in front of it then when I multiply by 10 I get 25.7936 so I don't know how my teacher got to the 57.9%
