40 + yr old twnhouse, I am the middle of 5 in our row. On the upper floor bathroom, every time I shower or pull tub plug there is a gurgle noise. When toilet flushes well there is a gurgle noise, however it other times needs a 2nd to 3rd flush without the noise. I bought 2.5 yrs ago and seems to be getting noisier or more difficult to flush and when there is company staying the toilet often plugs! I'm freaking out about the potential cost, regardless how much so I am crossing my fingers that it is a strata issue! Still I need to educate myself before bringing in someone to deal. I have read up on this, it's a little confusing so I need some feedback :)

Let me explain about vents. When you flush a toilet or drain a bathtub a suction is created by the water rushing down the pipe. This suction is relieved by a open pipe that runs to the outside called a vent. When a vent's stopped up the suction has to relieve itself somewhere, in this case your lavatory. The noise you hear is the air being pulled through the trap by suction. Go up on the roof and shine a light down the lavatory vent. I've seen birds nests, dead birds and critters caught down there and if you can't see anything you're going have to snake out the lavatory vent. Let out enough cable to get to the base and then put out enough to get to the main house sewer. Good luck, Tom
