Hi there, I have an outstanding rental debt from approximately 5 years ago. I continue to get calls from a acollection agency. Has the statue of limitations expired so therefore, I do not have to pay?? I am in Ontario

The statute of limitations don't apply to debt collectors... it only limits when you can get sued and be garnished by a court.

They can legally hound you until the day you die... if you owe it just pay it... if just for the peace of mind.

Thank you , but it does not clarify what the actual SOL is. I believe it is 2 years in Ontario and they can hound me all they want in the end they have no LEGAL recourse to get the money, correct? I believe I may also be able to send a letter notifying them it is past the SOL and to contact me only via mail but I have not confirmed that yet.

THey can keep it on your Credit report as an unpaid collections and that will haunt you every time you try to get a loan... rent a house, try to get a mortgage, buy a car... it will result in higher insurance costs... etc... they do have a lot of legal recourses... beyond a court judgement and a writ of garnishment.

And what the SOL is... is a period from the "LAST ACTIVITY" not when the debt occurred, that they have to file suit in court.
