6 months ago my wife and I moved into an apartment that has a "popcorn" ceiling containing asbestos. We learned this after signing the lease. Shortly after moving in, we noticed the ceiling peeling and cracking pretty badly near the air duct. After 6 months of complaining to the co-op and landlord, the co-op brought in THEIR asbestos abatement crew to remove the small area of concern. We were given a report from a hygienist, that said f/cc .004.

We have a baby on the way and are trying to figure out if we should move. Are these levels that could harm my wife and newborn? Part of me feels like I should move just because I had to ask the question. Any thoughts?

Are you willing to pay the penalties for breaking the lease? Asbestos is safe as long as its encapsulated, and its actually more dangerous to remove than it is to encapsulate..

And there are literally millions of houses that have that type of ceiling treatment that are perfectly safe as long as its intact and undisturbed. Tens of millions more have asbestos tile on the floor..

Being I've had training for dealing with that situation, I'm not concerned myself as I do have that type of tile floor in my basement. Which is mostly covered up... and will eventually be completely covered up.

We come into contract with asbestos every day somewhere, it is all over. As noted, as long as it is sealed it has no danger.

Only you can determine if you are willing to pay the penalty of moving.
