We have a basement bathroom (13 yrs. Old) that has a pump up system. For years the pump has made a loud thump noise as water has been pumped out.

Recently we had our basement bathroom flooded by a toilet malfunction. The pump system worked after the toilet malfunction until a few days ago we noticed the pump did not make the usual loud thumping noise. The pump makes a brief humming noise then shuts off about every 5 minutes.

We have unplugged the pump several times and only have the humming noise continue. We have flushed the toilet several times, ran water in the bathtub and all water has drained out but we are not hearing the loud thumping of the pump. No water has backed up yet, so what could be the problem?

Thanks!

I'm confused! On one hand you tell me the pump just hums and on the other you tell he the water drains away with no backup. So where's the problem. If it's working without all the thumping, ( that I'll bet was the check valve) where's your complaint? Back to you, Tom

Thanks, for responding. I'm confused as well.

For years, the pump always made a large thump noise as water was being pumped out. But now there is only a hum noise from the pump that cuts on and off consistently--about every two minutes. There is no back-up of water but the pump is not making the usual thump noise as it had for many years.

So should the pump hum or thump if working properly?
Thanks!

I don't think it's the pump that thumps, Sounds more like the check valve slamming shut.
If by humming you mean the pump's working normally and pumping out the pit the only complaint I can see is the loss of the thump.
What do you hear when the pump shuts down? If there a large amount of water draining back into the pit after shut down? Let me know, Tom
