Wife says sex is now very painful and now out of the question and lubricants don't help what can?

She may be losing interest in general, and her hormonal changes have a lot to do with that. But it's also possible that you aren't cuddling enough, sweet talking enough, hugging and smooching around the house or out in public enough, as foreplay.
It's also possible that you aren't using the lubricant in a way that helps. You can't just put some on and dive in. You need to use your fingers and take the time to work it all in and around her vagina. And hopefully that in itself will add a little pleasure for her too.
There may be reasons for pain other than just being dry. Organs (bladder, uterus, intestines) drop down and cause discomfort, and they can even prolapse (fall out). Her doctor can tell pretty easily.

I'd ask if this is the truth OR if it's an excuse.

When was the last time she had a complete physical?

If it is actually painful, she needs to see her doctor, menopause should not be making sex painful
