Hi,

I am a Brit living in NYC and am filing taxes for the first time.

I have an L1 Visa and have been living here for 15 months. I have received numerous bit of information about all the tax I can reclaim (!), such as I can reclaim my Social Security (which I now realise is not true). However, I have been told by many people that an L1 Visa can reclaim their City and State Taxes paid through the year - only to be told on an initial telephone consultation last night that this is a commonly held myth - and that L1 visa holders pay tax in exactly the same way as a US Citizen, and therefore cannot reclaim NYC City/State Tax.

Could someone offer me definitive information on this , maybe with a pointer to the most recent web published information?

Many thanks
Englishman in New York

The L-1 visa held by someone working in the U.S. for MORE than 183 is taxed like the H-1 and H-1B visa, which means you pay the same taxes (and get the same deductions and credits) as a U.S. citizen.
