I saw this on Facebook and it has me somewhat confused.

6-1x0+2/2=?

To me that reads as 6-1=5 then 5x0=0 then 0+2=2 then 2/2=1

I think the answer is 1 but I am seeing people saying it's 7 because of PEMDAS.

Without parentheses, I thought it would simply be done left to right.

Could someone tell me how it could possibly be 7?

If it is 7... could you please explain in simple English how you get that since I'm no math wiz.

I also get 1, and was always taught to go from left to right if there are no parens.

1 x 0 = 0.
6 - 0 = 6
2 / 2 = 1
6 + 1 = 7

Not saying that's the right method, but showing you how they arrived at 7.

Athos, did you mentally add parens?

No. You multiply and divide before adding or subtracting.

That's what I saw as the answer too... multiply and divide first but that makes no sense to me. I was taught that it reads left to right.

I get 1 as well.

It would be interesting to find out if there are math rules that differ from what we were taught, because I too was taught that no parens meant you did the equation left to right.
