Shut the pump off and open a cold water faucet. If your gage doesn't drop to zero then replace it and if it doesn't change readings as the pump pumps up to pressure than the gage is bad and should be replaced. Good luck, Tom

Thanks, I replaced the gauge and it works. My question now is what should the pressure should be at in a 30 year old house when it is at it's maximum pressure?

The average house pressure is 45 PSI. The range is between 40 and 80 PSI. Good luck, Tom
