I am trying to move home to live with my mother due to severe financial distress, can my ex fight me? We have been divorced for about 3 years. His job is in DC but TN is his home. He owns a home here. He has told me his lawyer says he can keep me here and thatit could turn into a long, financial mess.

Depends on the State but in general you cannot move without good reason and you cannot move the children to a location which impedes his ability to visit with them.
If you must move, go back to Court and ask for permission to go. If you leave without permission you can be brought back and you can lose custody.
