Hi,

I have a question regarding filing income tax for the year 2006. I came to the US on H4 status on June 2003 and changed status to F1 in Jan-2006. So for the year 2006 Do I have to file a dual status return or as a non-resident alien? The website says for change of status from F1 to H visa but not otherwise. Please advise.

Thanks and Regards,
msebina.

Msebina:

You CAN file dual status, but I see no logical reason to do so.

File as a non-resident alien for 2006.

Thanks for your response. Can I file as Married-Filing Jointly along with my husband who is on H1? Or please let me know how is it advantageous to file as a non-resident alien for 2006?

Yes, you CAN file jointly with your husband, but you BOTH will have to declare ALL of your world-wide income.
