View Full Version : Grass got overly mulched, how can I save it?

Recently I made a big mistake by cutting bermuda grass that was very tall and mulching it instead of bagging. As a matter of fact, that was done twice in a row before realizing that it is hurting the grass. Over the next few weeks, the grass lost its green and most of its density due to the thick layer of grass mulch that is laying on the soil. I've tried to save it as much as possible by using a lawn rake, but the grass mulch is pressed to the soil and I can hardly get any of it out.

I live in the south and we haven't had a major shortage of rain this year, grass is usually very green this time of year. How can I save it and return it to the previous shape? Is there something I can do before fall starts, like letting it grow out tall?

I read some articles online about possibly seeding more grass, but that would be last resort because last time I did it on a small patch, the bermuda that grew out turned out to be different than what was there before.

Someone told me there is a process called dethatching. Maybe a landscaping business or nursery in your area does this with good results.
