View Full Version : Plumbing water in home seems to go rancid quickly when sitting

We purchased a newly built home in May 2012. We have noticed how quickly any sitting water in our dishwasher becomes rancid smelling. We also noticed that clothes left in the clothes washer overnight become rancid smelling very quickly.

We recently noticed a smell in our garage that smells like a rotting animal. I am not sure whether all 3 of these things are related or not. I question the smell in the garage because we recently had some beef thaw in our freezer and blood ran down the back of the refrigerator. I thought I cleaned it all up, but there may be some residual in areas I can't see.

Anyway, the smelly clothes and rancid water in the dishwasher really concern me. What should be my first step in identifying the problem? We are still under our new home warranty so I want to get this resolved before next May.

I had one person mention that we might look at our Studor vent, but I don't know how to check that. Can anyone help?

Thanks
Beth

Hi Beth

The first thing I would check is that the drain line from the dishwasher loops up super high, above the inlet to the drain or disposal it is connected too so that you can be sure that waste water from the sink isn't draining into the dishwasher.

See images below. Let us know what you find, OK? We can discuss the other smells after that.
