The comment from the MP Ivan Dean struck me:

Immediately thought of the statement of the American prohibitionist Rev. Billy Sunday on the morning they enacted alcohol prohibition in the US:

“The reign of tears is over! The slums will soon be only a memory. We will turn our prisons into factories and our jails into storehouses and corncribs. Men will walk upright now, women will smile and the children will laugh. Hell will be forever for rent!”

Just ban everything.

We already ban noxious narcotics so why not ban tobacco is it any different to coca or marijahana. It has undesirable impacts and yes there was nothing wrong with a ban on alcohol, there are countries in the world where it isn't legal and life goes on. Criminals will do what criminals do, this is no reason for abdicating in favour of legalisation and let's face it what was permitted then would not be permitted today

I think it is more a case of dealing with public health consequences, the more a government becomes involved in provision of health care, the more they will seek to control the costs and nicotine addiction has some severe impacts on the costs of health care in the long run.

In a progressively minded society, society works to reduce the incidence of death, excepting as you say in the case of abortion, so therefore certain activities with high mortality rates are targeted

Not the issue Tal we can all get cheap and nasty, but not everyone is going to go searching for it. I applaud India's step If you have been to Asia you know how noxious the place is with cigarette smoke. But this isn't a ban except on effective advertising, that's why the tobacco companies are going ape, they can still sell their products but you have to look harder to decide which brand to buy. In illiterate countries, they rely heavily on logos and brands
