Apollo is my 5 month old Great Dane. I am looking for ideas on how to help curb his crying in a crate.

He goes in his crate when he is tired. He stays in his crate ALL night long without a peep.

Our issue is his rooing when we are gone (grocery shopping, etc).
Points to ponder...
-he only gets let out when he is quiet
-once he hears the key in the door when we come baxk home, he is silent.
-giving him a kong with goodies in it stopped it for about a week.
-tv off/on makes no difference.

I am at a loss. I hope he will grow out of it (he has a booming voice when he roos and while neighbors say its fine I am sure its irritating). Does anyone have suggestions in the meantime?

All pets are different. Some are OK if they can see you leave out a window, and be there when you drive back in. Can you leave him in one room near the door, with a window to look out of, instead of his crate? Drive away for just a few minutes and leave one person out back to listen. Practice various options on the shortest errands.
5 months is still a settling in and adjusting to loneliness time! Litter mates and people. Have patience. A Great Dane needs tons of attention and exercise, so much that he is tired when you go away on errands.

He is usually exausted when he goes in his crate when we leave (9 times out of 10 he puts himself in it.) He apparently is good unless we are gone fof 30+ minutes, then I guess he wakes up/finishes with his kong and starts...
I can't do the window thing - we live in an apartment building and our apartment faces simply greenspacs and trees.
