Maytag Plus side by side refrigerator was having problems keeping the upper refrigerator section cold. We had the compressor check and the refrigerant refilled but now if we make the upper refrigerator section colder, the partition between the refrigerator and freezer where the door seals get very hot. This does not seem right. We are concerned it could be a hazard. What could be creating this heat in this area?

That is what's supposed to happen. The hot gas line coming out of the compressor is routed around the freezer door to keep ice from forming and to make the refrigerator more efficient. You will notice it more when the compressor is running and if the coils are dirty. If the coils have not been washed out every six months it will burn up the compressor and when it's too hot the first place you will notice it is where you said. Pull refrigerator out from wall, remove front kick plate and remove the rear bottom cover (unplug first). Spray down fan and coils with spray cleaner like "409," "Simple Green," or a little dishwashing soap or liquid Tide. Scrub fan blades with toothbrush, if needed, and spray off all with water hose nozzle. It does not take much water. Wash out drain pan, too, which you may slide out from front. Replace rear cover before starting up unit. You should have had absolutely no reason to add refrigerant gas unless there was a leak. If you did the repairman would have had to weld up the leak, install a new drier, and vacuum down unit, unless you were scammed.
