View Full Version : Replacing shower in older house

Hi, I am in the process of replacing a shower stall in an upstairs bathroom. The problem is that my drain line for the shower is only 1 1/2" rather than 2" as is apparently the standard and size of all drains that I have seen. There was an old shower stall there but the drain leaked horribly and I have since found out it was because they basically rigged their own drain... aka... wrong parts/lots of solder. I have access from above as the stall is now removed and also have access from below but only of the elbow. Is there an easy solution to this besides cutting out some of the subfloor and refitting the drain with 2" pipe? There doesn't seem to be enough space available to run any reducer and switch to pvc at that elbow area. Would love some help with this.

To convert to 2" would entail tearing up the floor back to the vent stack and then cutting out and replacing the old drainage tee. not a job for the average home owner. Why not use the existing 1 1/2" trap and a 1 1/2" drain or increase to 2" and use a regular one? Check it out at; http://www.plumbrite.com/?page=faqs

Hi Tom, thanks for the reply. The link that you gave me was exactly what I was looking for. It didn't seem it was possible to find a drain to fit the 1 1/2" line. It certainly wasn't available at any home improvement in my area. I will be ordering one immediately and crossing my fingers. Thanks again for your help. David
