I am renting a condo and about 2 weeks after moving in, my wife and I noticed our hands would smell like mildew after using the kitchen sink. According to the landlord the faucet is only 6 months old, so he refuses to help us solve the problem. The smell is really noticeable after the faucet has not been used for about an hour. If you run the water, the smell seems to disappear after a few seconds. We decided to use a brita filter in case there was an issue with the water. We only filled the brita after the sink ran for about 30 seconds and any smell disappaited. After about a week, I noticed when I take the lid off the filter to refill, the mildew smell is in the brita pitcher.
If this helps, the faucet is one of those hose style faucts that can be pulled out. The on/off is a sliding arm that pulls out to turn on and then slide forward or backward to adjust the temp.
I have tried removing the spray head on the faucet and soak in bleach. This had no effect and running the water without this head on still produced the mildew smelling water.
Any suggestions? My landlord won't do anything and we are concerned because we have a new baby come soon and don't want to expose them to water that may have "issues."
