My daughter met her dad this year. She is 22. He wrote when she was born that he didn't think she was his but if I could prove it he would give ample support. Fast forward, she is now, of course, struggling to pay for school, and I am wondering if there is a possibility he could legally have to pay, due to the letter. He didn't state a time frame, so I am wondering how far I should push this...

Are you saying that you are thinking about getting DNA done and then filing for child support for the past 22 years?

First, she's an adult and so you can't file for child support. If it were Court ordered it COULD continue until she graduates - but, of course, that doesn't matter because it's never been Court ordered.

She could ask him to assist her with her school expenses.

Why at the time didn't you take the steps necessary to prove paternity? If you didn't need the money you could have put it in the bank for her use today. The "I don't want his money" angle gets posted all the time, and I NEVER understand the thinking.
