My Kenmore 600 series washer quit mid cycle, half full of water. I noticed there was a burnt smell, like when my vacuum belt breaks. The lady at Sears told us to "just open up the back and see if the belt needs to be replaced. Impossible! She said if its not the belt, its probably the transmission and you might as well buy a new washer. What can I do? When I tried to plug it back in and run it, it just hummed at me.

Someone will have to look at the belt.If the machine is older, then the belt is most likely worn and cracked to the point it's stretched and is slipping and burning. There could be something in the drain pump and that seized up causing the belt to burn. The transmission is pretty tough and a reputable repair man can guide you wisely.
