My best tip for you is too make sure when you are using your straightener that you go very slowly (not enough to damage your hair!). You can't just run it down your hair and expect it to be straight, so goo sloow. And also, once your done, if it's frizzy, you can buy a serum that will help smooth it down and also hold the look and keep it from curling up again.

No. Unless you have a "wet to dry" straightener than ALWAYS straighten your hair when it is dry.

I had that same problem! Not only is my hair too curly, it is THICK!
I know it might not be good for my hair, but I apply hairspray to each section before I straighten it, and it works like a charm(:

Now I wear my hair straight more often than curly. Do small sections at a time, and do it very slowly. I often go over each section a few times.
