Hello,

I am an Indian national on a F-1 visa and I am currently doing my CPT in Massachusetts. In my W-4 form for my employer, I had filled out my Indian address. However, I was told that I had to fill out a new one with my current address. I did so. I got my first pay check and the my federal status is mentioned as SINGLE. In the W2s that I have gotten from my school previously my status was always mentioned as Non-Resident Alien. My question is should I talk to my employer to get it changed to Non-Resident Alien. Would this help in me getting a tax refund later when I file my tax returns for the year?

The W-4 has no specification for non-resident.

The only restriction is that you cannot claim more than ONE allowance if you are SINGLE or more than TWO allowances if you are MARRIED.

This will guarantee that you over-withhold to cover your tax liabilities.
