The a/c comes on and blows super cold air but only stays of for about 6 minutes after running for at least 20 minutes. The thermostat is new as of today and it didn't help anything. The display shows that it is getting down to the desired temp but doesn't seem to get down low enough to kick off.

Get a HVAC guy out there to check it out before you burn it up... it could be anything from low freon.. to just being too hot and humid out and you have a poorly insulated house.
