Set up your equations.

What is the expression giving the amount of profit in the first fund? Call the amount invested a

And the second? That amount invested would be (1400 - a).

I am multiplying 9% x 101, which does not seem to be the right thing to be doing?

Okay, let's do it another way.

Let's say you invest a sum of a in the first trust. How much profit do you expect to get?

Case example, investing $100 in a trust with 5% profit gives me a profit = $100*5% = $100*(5/100) = $5
